They can operate continuously, on a timer, or be run manually before trips to ensure clean fuel delivery and prevent microbial growth or water accumulation.
What it does
The polisher removes water, sediment, rust particles, and biological growth (diesel bug) that can accumulate in fuel tanks over time. It circulates the entire tank volume through fine filtration, cleaning fuel that's been sitting for weeks or months.
Why it matters
Contaminated fuel is a leading cause of engine failure on boats, especially those that sit for extended periods. Fuel polishers can prevent clogged filters and injector damage while extending fuel life and maintaining engine performance.
General Maintenance
Run the fuel polisher for several hours before each extended trip to circulate and clean the tank. Replace filters per manufacturer recommendations or when flow decreases noticeably. Drain the water separator regularly and inspect for contamination. For boats in storage, run the polisher monthly to prevent microbial growth. Keep spare filters aboard, as they can clog quickly when polishing heavily contaminated fuel.
