What it does
Battery switches provide manual control over electrical system configuration. You can isolate a dead house bank to preserve the start battery, combine banks for extra starting power in emergencies or disconnect all batteries to prevent parasitic drain during storage.
Why it matters
Switching a battery switch to OFF while the engine is running can create voltage spikes that may damage electronics, alternators or voltage regulators. Corroded or worn switches can prevent engine starting or generate heat that poses a fire risk. Incorrectly configured switches may allow the house bank to drain the start battery overnight.
General Maintenance
Operate all battery switches through “1 , 2, and OFF” positions regularly to prevent contact corrosion and keep the mechanism moving freely. Consult a professional if you are not familiar with this procedure. Switching a battery switch to “both” or “combine” can cause damage if battery voltages are significantly different, and should generally only be performed in an emergency. Inspect switch mounting and cable connections quarterly for looseness, corrosion or signs of overheating. Annually, check switch contacts by measuring voltage drop under load.
